The truth about blood sugar

Often, diabetes is mistaken for high blood sugar levels and vice versa. Let us break down the difference between diabetes and high blood sugar levels.

 

Diabetes is a disease caused by high blood sugar levels. There are two different types: type 1 and type 2. High blood sugar levels are a condition whereby there is too much glucose in the bloodstream. High blood sugar can affect anyone, but it commonly affects people with diabetes. It is mainly common to affect diabetic people because they have little to no insulin to help break down glucose into energy.

 

As mentioned before, eating sweet or sugary foods can cause high blood sugar levels, leading to diabetes. But what if we told you that candy and other sweet desserts are not the only culprits? Yes! The most overlooked culprit is consuming food with lots of carbohydrates. These foods are rich in glucose, and if the glucose becomes excessive, it causes a rapid rise in blood sugar, leading to a diabetic coma.

NOTE: High blood sugar can affect anyone with or without diabetes.

 

3 lab tests will then be used to check for blood sugar levels

There are different methods to test for blood sugar levels in the body. These include:

  • Fasting method, a urine or blood test is taken after a patient fasts for eight hours
  • Random: a test is conducted randomly at any time to check the blood sugar level regardless of whether the patient is fasting.
  • The glucose tolerance test measures the level of blood sugar before and after drinking a glucose solution.

 

In as much as there is high blood sugar(hyperglycemia), there is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), a condition whereby the pancreas produces too much insulin glucose quickly broken down, and the cells absorb it, leaving less than standard sugar in the blood. Normal blood sugar level should be around 70 milligrams per decilitre to 120 milligrams per decilitre; if it is lower than the standard, then you are likely to have hypoglycemia, and if it is higher than the standard, then it is hyperglycemia.
