What is Panchakarma?

Imagine feeling younger, stronger and more energised, not by relying on stronger medications but through the power of high-quality Ayurvedic treatments. Panchkarma, a time-tested detoxification and rejuvenation therapy, helps cleanse your body, restore balance, and promote overall well-being. Eliminating toxins and enhancing natural healing revitalises you from within, leaving you refreshed and healthier. Before starting the procedure, Ayurvedic doctors check the body with intensive exams to prescribe a therapy accordingly. There are many factors such as tiredness and laziness throughout the day, unexplained body pain, unclear mind, bad breath, thick layer coating on the tongue, frequent diarrhea or vomiting that are considered indicators of a body’s need for Panchakarma.

Here’s how it helps your body

It follows a structured three steps process to cleanse, rejuvenate and heal the body from within. Let’s dive into each step.

  • Purva Karma

Also known as the preparation phase, is the very first action taken before the actual Panchakarma process begins. Thi step involves consuming medicated oils or ghee to lubricate internal organs and tissues making it easier to loosen the toxins. External Oleation is also done using massaging oils that are applied on the body, which penetrate the skin and soften the tissue.

  • Pradhana Karma

This stage incorporates Panchakarma with different therapies to relieve tensions by applying pressure to certain points, such as pressure points for headaches. Five Panchakarma types are mentioned below.

  • Vamana (Therapeutic vomiting)

This is the main step specialised for people who have Kapha dosha that is out of balance or in excess. It involves controlled and therapeutic vomiting to expel toxins accumulated in the upper digestive system.

  • Virechana (Purgation)

This step is designed to eliminate excess Pitta dosha from the body. It involves the use of herbal medications to cleanse the liver, intestine, and gallbladder, promoting overall detoxification and well being.

  • Basti (Enema)

Basti is one of the most important steps in Panchakarma, specially designed to balance Vata dosha by cleansing the colon using medicated herbal oils and decoctions. It is administered through the rectum making it one of the most effective ways to eliminate deep seated toxins from the body.

  • Nasya (Nasal Administration)

It involves the process of putting medicated herbal oils or powder through the nasal. This step is most beneficial for those facing hormone issues. This treatment is proven to be effective to cure headaches, migraine, rhinitis, sinuses, nasal infections, nasal congestion and other nasal related allergies.

  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy)

Under this treatment, blood purification is done. It involves the controlled removal of a small amount of blood to expel toxins and treat blood related disorders and restore balance in the body.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-treatment care)

This is the final phase of Pradhana Karma focused on recovery, rejuvenation and restoring balance after detoxification. Since the body undergoes deep cleaning, this step ensures a return to normal lifestyle by giving ayurvedic medicines to enhance the long term effect of Panchakarma.

Cleaning and rejuvenating the body and mind is extremely preponderant. A rejuvenated person works with utmost enthusiasm and dedication and even enjoys doing the work. If a person is not rejuvenated, one is likely to make mistakes and not be able to concentrate properly on things. At the same time, a rejuvenated person does the work with fewer mistakes.

Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic medicine, helps to clean and rejuvenate the mind and body. The body gets detoxified, and the immune system gets strengthened by this treatment. It solves the problem of imbalances in three doshas: Vata (it controls the breathing and blood circulation), Pitta (the metabolism is governed by it), and Kapha (the immune system is supported by it, and it provides physical form). Let us discuss the Panchakarma procedure step by step.

Purva karma (also known as the preparation phase)

First, the body needs to be prepared for the treatment and this is done in two ways. Firstly, medicated oil is applied to lose the toxins. Secondly, the body is prepared for sweating to remove the toxins.

Pradhana karma (also known as the main treatment phase)

This phase has all the essential processes that need to be followed for an efficient cleaning process.

    • Vamana (therapeutic emesis): Under this, a person is forced to vomit so that the toxins can be removed from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract, which helps to balance the Kapha dosha.
    • Virechana: Herbal laxatives are used to clean the intestines. If someone faces the problem of constipation, Virechana helps to solve that problem.
    • Basti: Under this, cleaning of the colon is done. For Vata dosha, it is quite beneficial. We call a bag a Basti. Oil or other medicated substances are used in this.
    • Nasya: If someone has a problem with sinus or headache, to clear the head and sinus, herbal oil or powder are instilled through the nostrils.
    • Raktamokshana: Under this, blood is removed but in small amounts just to remove all the toxins present in the bloodstream.

Paschat karma (also known as post-treatment care)

You need to take care of a lot of your body after taking this treatment. You need to follow a different diet that is beneficial for you at that time. One is asked to take some herbal supplements also.

Benefits of this treatment:

  • Body cleansing: By this treatment, the toxins present in the system are removed.
  • Rejuvenating: All the tissues and organs are revitalised, which ensures longevity.
  • Body balance gets restored: Holistic well-being is achieved as this treatment harmonises all the doshas.
  • Boost the immune system: The immune system is the natural defense mechanism of the body and it is strengthened by this treatment.
  • Enhance digestive fire: It helps to improve digestion and ensure that the nutrients get absorbed properly in the body.
  • Overall well-being: This treatment ensures overall well-being in all aspects whether mental, emotional or physical.
